This photo was taken in Slagotarjan, Hungary in 1990 just after the fall of the Iron Curtain. This is a statue of a Russian soldier that used to overlook the city to remind the citizens who was in charge. As a Peace Corps Volunteer in Salgotarjan I would often climb this hill for a bird's eye view of the town. Then one day during my two year assignment - the statue was torn down, gone forever, as if an attempt to erase the past.
