There were numerous farewell parties for us as we prepared to leave our beloved home of Vaitupu, Tuvalu. This is a picture of our little thatched house in the background that kept us as cool and comfortable as possible. We loved to look at the unique hand hewn logs and the meticulous thatching and we often said we could have no more perfect home. Lee is being escorted by the young ladies of the village to the meeting hall (maneapa) to an evening of wonderful local food and lively dancing and many speeches that would recall stories of our days on this magical island. Our farewells were the hardest part of all of our Peace Corps service...not the days when we didn't know the language, when we were confused about what our work would be or how to get started, not the days we were sick and wanting to go home...none was so hard as when we said goodbye...Tofa Tuvalu.
