Whenever anyone left the island, either by seaplane or boat, they were richly decorated with many flower garlands. Sometimes we were so heavily decorated it was hard to move from the weight and the strong fragrance. Truly an honor to be loved so much. The frangipani tree seldom had flowers on it because they were picked as soon as they came out and made into a garland (fou). It was common to see men and women wearing fou's on their head while working...they could last for days.
