This is a photo of women looking in on a demonstration of installing a smokeless stove under a water catchment. The women were so eager to learn so the demonstation could move to the next home. In Tuvalu it is important to keep possessions fairly equal. It was difficult to start a new project because the question was always who would get the first. Tuvaluans didn't want to be first because if they had something new and their neighbor didn't it created a discomfort in the community. So we tried to work as fast as we could so nearly everyone had a water tank or a new smokeless stove in a relatively short period of time to mediate this discomfort.
