Photo Description	This is the Rom dance, a traditional dance of the men of Ambrym island in Vanuatu. The men in full dress are the Roms. The other men are dressed in nambas, which is traditional dress for men. You can see Chief Mansop banging on a piece of bamboo. Behind him is a taller gentleman--his successor, Chief Edwin. Next to Chief Mansop is his son Bong Mai and on the otherside of him is my host brother Bong Taly. This photo was taken in a Nassara in Polipetakiver Village in 2007. Rom is a traditional dance for men, but the story actually started with women. As it was told to me: Four women unknown to each other each carved a mask and the four masks were identical. Because all carvings are copyrighted, a man killed the women to gain the rights to the design of the mask.
