This photo was taken of the grandmother who owned the house were I lived. Laundry was done by boiling the whites with lye soap and beating them on the rock at the cistern. If the grandmother and her friends were home when I was doing my laundry, it was not unusual for them to remove things from the clothesline and put them back into the wash tub because they were not satisfied with the way I had washed them. It was all in good humor. City water came to the house twice a week for about two hours, if we were lucky. Otherwise we paid to have it hauled from the spring.
