In this picture I was helping my artisans set up at an artisan fair. This was in the first year of my service and the first couple months of the project. Stationed in a small village in the eastern part of the Dominican Republic, I worked with the community of Villas Padre Nuestro to enhance and create various income generation projects including the following: an eco-tourism route through the national park of the east, an artisan business, and an artesan route; amongst other community projects. Of these, my most successful and rewarding project was working with a group of women artesans to create a small business. I helped develop and structure the business that soon became profitable. Later in my service, I applied for and won a US$60,000 grant from USAID, with matching funds from the Inter-American Development Bank among others. This grant was used for business expansion.
