This photo was taken on June 20, 2013 at Kidoko Health Center II in Uganda during a two month long training. 175 Village Health Team (VHT) members from 37 villages were trained and manufactured 106 cement pit latrine slabs in their communities. The slabs improve the health and safety of pit latrines over the traditional cow dung / mud and tree branch latrines that are susceptible to rotting and termite damage which can lead to collapse. In each of the four parishes, an executive committee was established in order to manage the project. These dedicated, volunteer health workers meet weekly to receive payments for the slabs through an affordable installment plan system so they can continue to manufacture even more slabs. This photo shows three female VHTs using their new skills to finish a cement pit latrine slab.
