SPA RESULTS. Photo taken Oct. 27, 2012 in the state tree nursery of CONAFOR, the Mexican Forest Service, in Mexico. My assignment is to help CONAFOR strengthen its environmental education and outreach, and I have focused my efforts on raising awareness of birds and habitat conservation. Birds are one of the easiest windows onto the natural world: they are lively and musical, come in all sizes and a riot of colors, and can be found almost anywhere you happen to be. But while birding is not expensive, it does require a few tools, and therein lies the Catch-22: without binoculars and field guides, it is hard to get anyone interested, and if no one is interested, it is impossible to find the equipment. I used SPA funds to acquire enough binoculars and Spanish language field guides to offer free field trips in the tree nursery. Today our group has a name (AvesEcoAgs), a website, and a monthly field trip to a new natural site. Everyone is welcome, and their smiles tell the story.
