A small SPA grant started a massive social movement. The PCV started a corporate social responsibility program with the largest private employer in Ukraine. The first year 20 volunteers took a 12 hour train ride to Dolyna, Ukraine and then hiked six hours to an old cabin which was almost falling down. They rebuilt the foundation, re-roofed the cabin, put in windows and hiked out 25 bags of garbage. This volunteerism project grew to over 125 volunteers per summer by the 3rd year, including nationals and Peace Corps Volunteers. The NGO Friends of the Carpathians gained a large volunteer base and have refurbished over 8 cabins at this time. They have developed partnerships with many new businesses and the people are starting to gain pride in keeping the forest litter free and cabins well kept.
