SPA in Action, SPA Results: October 2011 PCV worked with 40 local fishermen on the northeastern coast of the Dominican Republic to help protect the local reef and create a sustainable fishing industry with the help of a grant from the Small Project Assistance (SPA) program.
Through this SPA project, fishermen realized the importance of working together, instead of having many fishermen competing among themselves. They know that because the sea has limited resources, they must find other income alternatives. The SPA project helped fund materials to construct fish aggregating devices and lobster houses to encourage open water fishing and establish rules to protect marine life in the bay.
Working with the local fisherman to promote group strengthening, the project also incorporated workshops on business management and administration, leadership skills, project planning and alternate income generation opportunities and teaching youth alternate and sustainable fishing practices.
