Sarge was open and frank in his discussions with Philippine Group III Volunteers. We asked him about how the organization came to be named “Peace Corps,” if he thought that name wasn’t a bit pretentious and fatuous given the kind of assignments we ended up with.
“We argued about that for a long time,” Sarge admitted in his usual frank, honest manner. “We knew the very name was pretentious, that it represented an unattainable goal in anyone’s term of service. But in the end, Jack liked it and wanted it. So that’s what we agreed to call it.”
