In April 2013 the Gender and Development Committee of Peace Corps Burkina Faso held the first annual Women's Health and Leadership Conference. During three days, eight volunteers and their eight female counterparts learned about key health topics affecting the livelihood of community members; especially women and young children. Health topics included malaria, hygiene, nutrition, reproductive and sexual health, and family planning. In this photo, volunteers and counterparts are placing various images of different food items on the Nutrition House according to their function: Proteins, vitamins/minerals, and carbohydrates. The ultimate goal of the conference was to empower women to take health of themselves, their families and of their communities into their own hands. Within the two months following the conference, six out of the eight volunteer/counterpart pairs conducted community health campaigns in their villages based off the knowledge and skills gained at the conference.
