Date: June 2012
Location: Las Cruces, Nueva Segovia, Nicaragua
What's Happening: Peace Corps Volunteer Matt Reid and the school's security guard and also one of the volunteer parents, Don Ramon, work together to put the last of the eco-bricks into place.
The community came together to construct a classroom out of "eco-bricks"- plastic bottles filled with clean, inorganic trash. The community expressed a need for a new classroom for their seventh graders as well as an interest in addressing environmental awareness. Three different communities participated in school-wide recycling contests and recycling campaigns. Close to 2,000 "eco-bricks" were collected.
The local construction foreman who led the building aspect of the project passed away about 4 months after its completion. This type of building had never been constructed or even heard of in this part of the country. It was truly amazing to see the community/nearby communities work together to complete this project.
