The town of Haik was in a very rural part of Wolo Province, in Ethiopia. Teachers in Ethiopia are revered and given much. The house I lived in was considered grand, by Ethiopian standards. I had three rooms: a living area, a bedroom (in this photo) and a kitchen, where the housekeeper slept and worked. Every evening, the one 40 watt bulb, and the only electricity I had, went out at seven pm, and I spent the rest of the evening by candlelight.
