Our Health Nutrition team taught at a Gram Sevika Basic Training School for young people who would become rural elementary teachers. One month we taught courses in health, nutrition, vegetable gardening, and making of a smokeless chula (stove).
The next month we took our students out to village schools where they gave practice lessons and encouraged the growing of vegetables in the school garden to enrich the mid-day meals. CARE provided butter oil, cornmeal, and powered milk. We hoped our students would continue with these lessons when they became teachers.
At the end of our stay at Eluru, Andhra Pradesh, India, students and faculty gave a banquet to thank us for our service.
I am in the center wearing the hoop earings.
