This photo is of myself, Ryan Ruggiero, and peer educator, Lusanda, during a life skills training for out of school youth in South Africa. I am explaining information about gender roles to Lusanda, one of our first Stars of Tomorrow -out of school, unemployed youth in our community who are trained as peer educators to educate others. Where we stay, nearly one in three people are infected with HIV. Empowering girls to believe in themselves, challenge gender roles and educating them reduces their risk to HIV and unwanted pregnancies. Many girls are too afraid to talk to their partners about condom use and contraception. The first step is opening their minds to what gender roles already exist.
