Women's Day is a national holiday in South Africa. From 2007-2009, my husband, Ben, and I were Volunteers in the rural village of Mokuruanyane, SA. My primary project was working with four women educators to develop Chrysalis Girls Club, an after-school girls empowerment program for the 75 7th grade girls in our village. In the 2008 school year, six weeks of our program were devoted to women's reproductive health, sex education, and HIV/AIDS awareness & prevention. On Aug. 8, 2008, the girls & leaders of Chrysalis Girls Club shared their knowledge with the village by hosting Mokuruanyane's first National Women's Day celebration. Collaborating efforts with Abbotspoort Home & Community Based Care and the local clinic, the celebration involved sex education, self-defense, reproductive health, crafts, music, food, & dancing. Sex education is essential to preventing the transmission of HIV/AIDS. In this photo, Chrysalis Girls Club Leader, Beauty Hlako, is teaching women about the menstrual cycle.
