This photo depicts a 6th grade student from Nicaragua in April 2002. During my Peace Corps service, I served as an Environmental Education Volunteer and worked in elementary schools. My Peace Corps Partnership Project was to complete the 1st phase of a school auditorium buildling project in cooperation with the school's Parent Teacher Association. My aunt knew how much I missed chocolate so she mailed me this 5lb Hershey bar. I knew immediately it would serve as a unique raffle item for the raffle we were hosting to raise funds for the auditorium.
The students sold raffle tickets for 1 cordoba (~1 penny) each, selling over $160.00 U.S. dollars worth of raffle tickets. Rosa was the lucky winner of the Hershey bar. On the day she won, she was in fact not in class but instead behind the school fence selling food to her classmates. She was thrilled to have won the candy bar! Knowing if she took the candy bar home her mom would make her sell pieces of it on the street, she never went home and sold the candy bar on her own. She made enough money to purchase shoes and socks to match her school uniform.
