Photo Description	This farmer was taught how to build a fish and raise tilapia by Elizabeth as part of the Peace Corps' Rural Aquaculture Promotion Project. Here he has taken some of his harvest to the town of Isoka, Zambia to sell, tying one kilogram (kg) of tilapia onto a bark string and selling them for 4,000 kwacha per kg, equivalent to about $1 US at the time (Oct 2002). With a goal of 30 kg/300 sq. meter pond every six months, a farmer could make enough money to put several children through school (about $4-6 US/child for 6 months), some medicines and a 1 sq meter bale of donated clothes, within which something could be found for everyone in the family. I had returned with USAID's Farmer-to-Farmer program to teach Peace Corps volunteers' fish farmers how to avoid inbreeding in their fish.
