Esperanza is the senora I pass every day at the entrance to my office, moaning for a contribution, one hand outstretched the other waving a laminated story about her predicament; and every day I must greet here with a smile and a decision, often digging into my pocket for pesos, other offering her one of my takeout gorditas. On this day I ask HER for a favor – a photo. Her smile surprises me – wide, authentic, full of grace. Suddenly she’s a person with dignity.
