This photo was taken in mid-March, 2006, somewhere a little more than halfway between Rosso and N'Diago, Mauritania. We were transporting 60 improved cookstoves, each weighing 30 kg, 128 kilometers from the regional capital, Ross, to N'Diago, on the Atlantic coast. Mauritania had just experienced a coup d'etat the previous August, and the military junta that was current running the country meant an increased military presence, especially in our region, because of its major border crossing. Checkpoints were frequent, and giving soldiers a lift to a remote and hard to get to post, was not something you argued with. These two were fairly quiet. But when we ran into some serious car trouble and spent an hour getting the truck out of the mud, we were able to share with them a favorite American treat, DumDum lollipops. No one says no to Dum Dums.
