This photo was taken in July of 2007 at the Kaedi lycee in southern Mauritania. The girls in the picture come from villages all over the country, and are participating in an EcoHealth Camp organized by Health and Environmental Education volunteers. This was taken at the beginning of the camp Olympics. Girls in Mauritania do not get many opportunities to play sports, but to prepare them for foot races, long and high jumps, and games, we took them through stretching exercises first. The girl in the pink shirt close to the camera is Mariam, from Jidr El Mohghuen. She was washing her skirt after lunch, so when the call came to assemble for the Olympics, she had to improvise. She participated in every event, including the high jump, in a towel. Her team, wearing red bandanas, came in first place.
