This photo was taken in November of 2005, in Jidr El Mohghuen, Mauritania. As a new volunteer, one of the most difficult things to adjust to was how to be a "good guest" when getting to know new families. The midwesterner in me demanded that I help out with lunch. This distressed my hosts a great deal, when I came to visit I was taken in to the best room, given a pillow and a cushion on the floor, and implored to lay down and rest. Eventually, with a few host families, I was familiar enough to lose the "guest" status, and be allowed to fetch water and help out at mealtimes. But in the early months I spent a lot of time alone in this room, watching my grandmother prepare lunch, just me, and the chicken.
