If it wasn't for Maria, I would have left Moldova a long time ago. I had a hard time understanding my rather strict (but caring) host parents when I first arrived at my permanent site and they kept telling me they were going to introduce me to Maria, a retired English teacher. However, I wasn't expecting much. But then she arrived at my house. She peeked her head around the corner and said, "Good evening, I'm Mary/Maria!" in the sweetest voice without the trace of an accent. She had her red hair piled in a loose bun on the top of her hair like the always does, and then she told me that everything was going to be okay. We then realized we shared the same birthday (September 9th), although she celebrates hers on September 21st because that is her Saint's day. So on September 21st I gathered as many students as I could with as many flowers as they could gather and we went to her house and sang happy birthday. You see, even though she is not a teacher anymore she is still touching the lives of the students. She cried and said it was the best birthday she's ever had. #sharingAmericangenerositywithMoldovanhospitality (thank you, Twitter)
