While serving in Jamaica (05-07) I worked at Mocho Primary School (what we would call an elementary school). I went through the school when I was first there and took many photos of the students, including several striking portraits. In this portrait, this first grade girl, clutching her pencil and rubber (eraser), paused in her learning, seems to be looking into the camera in such a way as to seem like she is looking through the lens... and into me. In a sense it makes her the observer and me the observed. When I look at this photo I often wonder what she was thinking as she gazes piercingly back at me.
