My wife Karen and I were volunteers in Truk, Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands (now Chuuk, Federated States of Micronesia) from 1974-76. Twenty married couples comprised our group, which served as teachers throughout Truk. We lived on the island of Dublon (Tonowas) within the Truk Lagoon.
This photo, taken in July 1975, shows Karen wearing a colorful Trukese dress that was made by a woman in our host family. Karen is sitting outside our house with two young girls from our host family, Fifi and Dandan. All three are wearing fresh flower "maramars" in their hair and look so happy and youthful, although Karen was at least 10 years older. We often had local visitors, young and old, who just came up to pass the time. This kind of cross-cultural interaction made our experience very enriching.
