I met Chantal in a neighboring village and due to our shared connection in the arts, I focused some of my work as a small business development PCV on promoting her and her craft. When I met her she only dyed and sold the printed batik cloth she crafted to local clients. We worked to turn the fabric into bags and accessories, creating a brand label and promoting her business at local and international trade fairs. Today, she has a formally registered business in Togo, and sells the aklala brand in Togo and the US. Here, we are shaking out the wax from the newly dyed cloth as we hang it to dry in the Togolese sun.
