This photo was taken during the 610th anniversary of the town of Perechyn, Ukraine, I served for 3 years. About five feet away, 14 members of the community and I had just finished selling 700 raffle tickets. The money, in-kind donations and volunteer support for this event were an "experiment" by these visionary activists. The confidence they gained this day spurred them to launch the Perechyn Community Foundation Youth Bank.
Here I was standing in the town square with professional actor and community volunteer, Maksym Olah. He had just finished carrying the center of a maypole around which dancers performed during the anniversary parade. The parade had just ended and he stopped by to find that the tickets had already sold out.
When I look at this photo, I am always struck by the contrast of the two worlds coming together. These young people with whom I worked have become powerful community movers and shakers - something I never doubted they would be from the first day I suggested we try some fundraising. But, never would I have imagined that the two people in this photo would be married two years later. One never knows the direction international relations might take us.
