This photo shows an artificial island in Lau Lagoon, Malaita, Solomon Islands. The 'Asi' built artificial islands primarily for safety by piling rocks and coral in tidal lagoons and constructing leaf and stick houses. They were skilled fisherman and would barter with the 'Tolos" for root crops and fruits at kastom markets. This artificial island contains tall trees that sheltered the taboo area that housed head hunting trophies and kastom items. "Christianized" artificial islands cut the tall trees and destroyed the taboo sites upon conversion.
