This photo depicts Kwarae Cultural Group students at the Adaua Secondary School of Malaita in the Solomon Islands. This photo was taken in Oct 1992 during the official opening of the new school. The Adaua Secondary School was built with Australian Aid and opened its doors for the first time in 1992. Peace Corps volunteers were part of the first Adaua "pioneers" at the inception. The Kwarae group of students ranged from forms 1-4 (grades 7-10) and they performed a "Kastom Danz" for visiting dignitaries during the Opening Ceremonies. The dance represents a mock battle, and they are adorned with clam shell pendants, shell money necklaces, and traditional dress.
