This photo was taken during a Children's Day (Día del Niño) celebration at the Escuela Básica Paraguay - Japón in La Colmena, Paraguay, South America.
La Colmena was the first Japanese colony in Paraguay, and the children in this school receive instruction in Spanish, Japanese, and the native language Guaraní.
This photo shows two sisters, one of whom is holding a gift hand-made for her by her teacher using recycled materials.
The photo also shows the poverty level of some of the students who attend the school. Many come to class without shoes or coats, and many are malnourished. Many miss school on a regular basis because they have to work. I am currently working with the community on a Social - Action plan to improve the health and education of the children in this school.
