It was a warm day in Kazakhstan, marking the end of a long, cold winter and the beginning of a much needed spring. The thirteen of us had been in our training village for only eleven days when we were summoned from our language classes to participate in a Kazakh national holiday: Nauryz, or "new day." Each year, on the 22nd of March, locals congretate to celebrate the arrival of spring, and do so by constructing their native yurts, wearing traditional clothing, eating traditional food, and gathering to sing and dance. This photo was taken just before a group young women were preparing to perform a traditional Kazakh dance at the Nauryz celebration.
