I snapped this photo of first graders sitting on paint cans in Masia Primary School, Tsatsane Valley of Quthing Region, Lesotho, as I traveled as an Education Volunteer in April 2007, doing teacher observations. Their cute smiles show they are delighted to be going to school, unaware that children in many other parts of the world have not only desks and chairs, but also paper, crayons, and multi-media learning resources. I was able, in one of my projects in collaboration with Friends of Lesotho, to have 25 desks delivered to this remote mountain school a couple years later, though probably the 6th graders, not the first graders, were the beneficiaries. And the truck that delivered them broke an axel, I later heard.
