After attending a funeral feast during the Month of Flies, my "sister" Myra carried my share of the leftovers home. She carried my food in a coconut fond basket that was made on-the-spot.
Myra is the oldest daughter of the couple whose home I lived in while cross-culture training in Wene district, Kitti kingdom on the island of Ponpei in southeastern Micronesia. She will inherit her mother's land as all real estate is owned only by women and passed matrilineal.
The Month of Flies follows the Month of Breadfruit when breadfruit ripens on the island. Much of the fruit rots unharvested on the forest floor, breeding flies. The flies spread disease that cause many people to die.
