These children are half siblings of my next door neighbors where I taught school in Kolahun, Lofa County, Liberia, West Africa. At the time, they were both too young to have names, so they were known as "Little Old Lady" and "Little Old Man." They are sitting on the front stoop of my cement plastered adobe house. This picture was taken on one of the many market days they were left to play around my house while their mothers went shopping for a couple hours in the weekly town market.
In the Mandingo custom, Little Old Lady wears one gold earring in each ear to announce her bride price is one cow. By the time I left three years later, she was wearing 6 earrings in each ear. She would grow to become a beautiful woman with a pleasing personality to match.
