This photo was taken on June 3, 2011 in Guatemala. The community is comprised of people who were displaced during the Guatemalan Civil War and were given this land as a part of the Peace Accords. It is five hours from its municipal capital and the population consists of five different Mayan ethnicities. Volunteer Hilary Kilpatric helped them to build a school for seventh, eighth, and ninth grade (basico) serving ten surrounding communities. This school makes it possible for youth in this area to continue their education beyond primary school. The school is constructed of 13,000 recycled plastic bottles, helping to solve the growing problem with trash in the area as well as increasing opportunities for education.
