Upon returning to the visit to the village I worked in as a community development Volunteer, I made a visit to the local school. Struggling with my Turkish I told them that I was the director of "a school for children before elementary school." The Principal said, "Oh, you mean an Ana Okulu" a mother school, and he led me to his one preschool classroom.
At the time I was a board member of the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). I was both very surpirsed and very pleased to see that the classroom was quite developmentally, with the room broken down into very much the same kinds of learning centers NAEYC recommends.
