Every Saturday morning a local farmer would kill one of his cattle and sell the meat at the local market. This was the only fresh meat that was sold in town. Unfortunately, the meat was tougher than shoe leather. My diet was rice mixed with either collard greens, palm butter, crayfish (a treat!) and fresh bread baked by a local baker. Occasionally, my roommate and I would venture to Joseph Eid’s Grocery Store and purchase some canned food to eat. 1968
