Taken in 1969 at the end of the rain season (probably late summer), I worked with Pa Sam on his upland rice farm near Vaama Nongowa in the Eastern Province of Sierra Leone. A most generous man, he would see to it that when his friends might be low on rice, that they would be supplied with enough to get by until the next growing season. Her he sits in mid-afternoon at his farm house. In the picture on the support he sits on, is his sling, which with stones was an effective means to keep birds from the maturing rice seed. His trusty umbrella and overcoat can also be seen.
