Village chief, Pa Foday, was also a weaver of local "country cloth." Here on his veranda, he weaves traditional cotton cloth on a tripod Mende loom. Pa Foday was a very amusing man. Although he spoke little in the way of English, from time to time, in jest, he would pretend to speak to me in English. His inflection and imitation of an English man was so good that the first time I fell for it, and everyone around had a good-natured laugh - even me. This photo was taken in Bitema Nongowa in the Eastern Province of Sierra Leone in 1969.
