I took this photo at the finish line of the first race. BREDS is an organization established in 1998 by Peace Corps Volunteer Aaron Laufer and local community leaders. The funds raised during this brutal, yet joyful, annual competition support several ongoing community projects. The missions that hold my heart are the ones that support early childhood development and parenting programs. The Treasure Beach Women’s Group actively participates. Actually, the entire community joins this affair in some fashion, which is why it is so successful year after year.
I had the opportunity to contribute as an event volunteer in 2010. It was an amazingly competent coordination of sponsors and competitors and volunteers that consumed an entire weekend. Some of the Peace Corps Volunteers competed in the road race and the triathlon. They were an impressive group. We all had a great time and headed home to our respective work sites exhausted and happy to have seen what can be accomplished with some focused passion and shared resources.
