I took this photo on Sunday 8/7/2011 at my neighbors quince anos celebration. My husband and I attended the ceremony of the quincinera and following the service, the delicious lunch games for the children commenced. After a rousing and slightly dangerous attempt to bust open a pinata they moved on to what the Belizeans call the "Slippery Pole." The slippery pole is a tall pole with money stashed at the very top. After the money is stashed the men cover the pole with lard to made it almost impossible to climb. The children start attempting to climb the pole but without help from the crowd the can get no more then two feet from the ground. Soon the adults start lifting the children up to help them and eventually the children begin climbing up each others' bodies to reach the top. It is an amazing demonstration of team work and competition at the same time, I have never laughed so hard in my life!
