I took this photo at the naming ceremony of a baby born to one of the women I worked with in improving pre-natal health practices in the fall of 2007. The ceremony occurred 7 days after the birth of the baby which is the tradition in this village in Senegal. For the ceremony, babies' heads are shaved with a (brand new!) razor. Then they are quickly dipped into water that contains kola nuts and bark from a local tree. They are then given a name by the village imam.
