In conjunction with the Peace Corps 50th Anniversary and the Pinyasan (Pineapple) Festival in the Philippines, Peace Corps Volunteers conducted an "Adopt-a-Classroom" event on June 16, 2011, in which 60 out-of-school youth were taught about the spirit of volunteerism. With the cooperation of the Department of Education and the municipality, an elementary school classroom was selected and desks were painted the colors associated with the Festival. The center top photo shows the desks before being painted and the top right photo shows one of the children painting a desk. At the center right is Volunteer Kevin, 2010-2012. At the lower right young participants hang on every word of Volunteer Harrison, 2010-2012, as he converses in the local Bicol language. The center left photo shows Volunteer Megan, 2010-2012. The colorful finished desks at the top left are sure to brighten the day of the students in the classroom they'll be returned to. Photos taken and collage by Volunteer Lawrence Kahn, 2010-2012.
