This photo was taken on May 9th, 2011 in celebration of Victory Day in Ukraine. The parade took place in the city and ended atop the hill of the eternal flame. This photo was taken as I was walking through a crowd with an elderly woman who had been a nurse in the war. The woman had an amazing story and suffered daunting hardships. She could barely walk and people were giving her tons of flowers. She gracefully took each flower and gave them to me as she continued telling me about her life in the war. It was at this moment that I looked up and this young beautiful girl was carefully listening to us (the blurry image at the left of the photo is actually the elderly woman). When I look at this photo, I see many things. Overall I see the image of an innocent nation. The young girl is dressed in traditional Ukrainian clothing. She represents both the past and future of Ukraine; she has striking innocence, but has confidence while looking at the older woman to the left. She has an expression as if she knows her generation are the next future leaders of this beautiful country. The colors are vivid, and represent freedom (red, white and blue) or so it may be interpreted by an American. I am not a photographer, but I enjoy capturing moments of beauty. I did not get the names of the elderly woman, or the young girl because the festivities split us apart thereafter. I hope you enjoy this photo.
