This picture was taken on January 18, 2008 along the road that connects the villages of Lotima and Mrabani near Taveta, Kenya. The boys were taking maize stalks to Lotima to sell as livestock feed. At the time this picture was taken, most of Kenya was still reeling from the contested presidential election on December 27, 2007 and the violence that followed. The villages around Taveta remained peaceful throughout the crisis, and residents stoically went about their lives.
Less than three weeks after this photo was taken, Peace Corps evacuated all volunteers from Kenya due to the security concerns posed by the post-election violence.
