The collection of the organic waste is an integral part of the solid waste management project. The waste is brought to the compost facility where it turns into valuable compost. The City of Joal sells the compost at $5 per 50 kilogram bag. Coupled with the $2 per month households pay for the collection of their garbage and the sale of the compost, the project is self-sustaining. As well cholera, malaria and other maladies have diminished signficantly in the four neighborhoods in the solid waste management pilot project. The solid waste project is being expanded city-wide and throughout Senegal by the Senegalese Government, Peace Corps and NGOs.
