This photo was taken the day pinatas were introduced to the students at Vaipu’a & Fogasavaii Primary School. The year 7 & 8 students had blown up the balloons, learned to make glue from recycled paper and water and pasted the layers. After they had dried completely, they were painted and filled with candy. The whole school assembled in the hall when it was time to bust open the pinatas. I like this picture because it captures a moment in which I’m sharing a piece of my culture and my own childhood experience with the children I’ve grown to love so much, not only as their teacher, but as their friend, neighbor, sister and pisi koa.
