This photo was taken in January 2011, on the top of the Santa MarĂa Volcano in Quetzaltenango, Guatemala. January is the clearest (yet coldest!) month, so we decided to hike it then for the best visibility. We started out at 5 am in the pitch black, and noticed two dogs following us during the entire four-hour, grueling hike. By the time we'd huffed and puffed our way to the crater, we were exhausted and ready for some snacks. Of course, we fed our two furry companions as well. At which point our guide told us that these dogs hike the volcano almost every day, but only follow "gringos" because they know that Guatemalans won't feed them. How these dogs are able to make the distinction is a mystery, but we sure enjoyed their company, and they enjoyed our snacks and water just as much!
